The West Jordan Historical Museum news

On the 30th of October, the West Jordan Historical Museum held its 2nd Annual Pumpkin Walk. Despite rain during the week, the sky was clear everything went very well. Parents and kids in Halloween costumes arrived early, eager to make the rounds of the various games, activities and treats. This year’s event was sponsored in part by Frito Lay, Albertsons, Tommie’s Donuts, Jordan Valley Hospital; Schmidt’s Produce, the Utah/Nevada Dairy Council, Dannon Yogurt, High Uinta Pack Goats, ZAP, the SUP, Dunford Bakery, the Utah Antique Machinery Association and Paul Di Francesco from the Bonneville Forge Club. The event was kicked off at 11 a.m. with a flag ceremony on our new flag pole. The ceremony was led by Larry Harper as the flag pole and flag was his Eagle Scout project.

The Utah Antique Machinery Association came with several restored farm tractors for all to enjoy. The kids were also treated to a hay rides through out the day being pulled around by a restored David Bradley riding tractor. The blacksmith demonstration was well attended with young and old enjoying watching as the black smith worked the metal into small leafs for key chains.  The kids enjoyed apple bobbing, eating donuts from a string, face painting, bean bag toss, fishing booth, dutch oven cooking, hot chocolate and cider. The haunted outhouse with the screaming skeleton was so popular that many of the kids went back to open the door several times. We also had a ‘wheel of treats’ in which the kids would have to do a trick to get a treat. Nola Duncan, assisted by Tiffany Primm, led the tours inside the museum house. Everyone complimented Nola her on her knowledge of West Jordan history. Several former dairy farmers came through and enjoyed the current dairy displays in the dairy barn. A tree planting ceremony was conducted by the police department in honor of our two fallen policemen. An oak bench and plaque was donated by the South Valley School. The people who attended also received an additional treat. As they left, they all picked out a pumpkin to take home courtesy of Schmidt’s Produce.

We wish to thank all of our volunteers who worked throughout the day to help make our 2nd Annual Pumpkin Walk a great success. We could not have done it without them. Hope to see you all next year for this event. We welcome those who are interested in being part of our museum board or would like to serve on committees and help preserve our West Jordan heritage.
